“What do I do now?”
Car Accident Checklist
- Remain Calm.
- Check to make sure that you and your passengers are all right.
- If another vehicle is involved, check to make sure those individuals are all right.
- If anyone at the scene of the accident requires immediate medical attention, call an ambulance
- Call the police.
- If your vehicle is stopping traffic or is presenting a hazard (and can still be driven) move it to the side of the road.
- Make a note of which police department and which ambulance service respond to the accident (you should get the name of the police office you speak with at the accident scene and a case number, if provided).
- Exchange information with the other driver: Address, home phone, work phone, license plate number, Year/make/model of auto, vehicle Identification number, name of insurance company, effective date, policy number, and the phone number of the agent.
- If there are witnesses, get their names, addresses, and phone numbers.
- Don’t discuss the accident with anyone except the police.
- If you are hurt or shaken up and need help getting home, call someone to pick you up.
- Report the claim to your insurance company.
- Complete the Motor Vehicle Crash Report form. This form can be downloaded here:
